Making friends in the Community

by James Wampler
(Shelbyville, Ky. USA)

I spoke with some individuals in the Solar Cookers International facebook group (a very active solar cooking group with great web resources(http://www.solarcookers.org/) and have been discussing building a standards based solar cooker curriculum with other educators.

Currently, the working group I am in consists of a Physics professor, a musician with a doctorate in Physics, a former teacher/web editor, a school principal, an architect, and two other teachers.

As I build and develop my curriculum, I feel like this group will be an invaluable resource. This year, I became the senior member of our 8th grade science staff for our county. I'd really like to present some top notch material to the rest of the staff if they would like to create solar projects of their own.

An update on the Solar Soccer Smores - they continue to be a hit! But as I am coaching, the girls always forget to snap some pictures. Next opportunity will be this weds.

Again if anyone has ideas for something simple that doesn't need to be monitored that I could use as a snack, I'm all ears! I'm sure that feeding athletes smores after a game breaks the heart of dietitians everywhere...

Roasted asparagus?? Olive oil, salt & pepper, and they're "almost" like french fries.... I don't know how much they'd have to be monitored, though.

Roasted apple sliced w/ cinnamon & sugar?? Messy, though.

Just give them some nuts or string cheese (protein) with the smores and the sugar won't be so bad. LOL

"Little Smokies Wieners" make a great snack for kids and they are easy, hands-off preparation solar cooker snacks.
Just set them in a solar oven or panel cooker and let them go until your are ready.
Voila!
