How to dry and dehydrate in a solar oven?

by BC

Has anyone dried fruits and vegetables in their solar cooker? I bought these great veggie chips at Costco the other day. They are actually dried vegetables, not powdered veggies with potato starch and then molded into a straw or chip shape. They are actual vegetables that have been dried into a crunchy snack! My husband loves them! I am wondering if I could achieve the same thing with the solar oven? If so, at what temperature does the oven need to maintain? And for how long do I leave them in? The sun is getting lower on the horizon as we head toward winter, so I’m thinking I may need to wait until next summer to try this one?

Any pointers would be appreciated!

At what oven temperature is this done? Does it take an hour? Four?

Thanks for the tips!

Dehydrating in a solar oven
by: Jim La Joie

My experience has been that dehydrating in a solar oven is generally not a good idea. Two things:
Your temperature will likely be far too high (dehydrating is low heat and gentle process of removing moisture, not overcooking)
Direct sunlight is not good for vegetable color or vitamin retention.
Instead, dehydrate your veggies in a conventional or solar dehydrator - not solar oven. When very dry, process these into a fine meal, combine the meal with whatever to make your dough, then shape and bake, don't fry, in your solar oven.
